Just The Two Of Us

Hi Everyone!
Thanks for stopping by to visit today. :-) I have a card for you using another image by Whimsy And Stars.
It's called "Dancing Love". You can find it here.
I decided to do a "freeform patchwork" design which means just like it sounds. I just lay the paper down, mark and cut it in random designs. If you haven't tried it you need to, it feels liberating somehow. As long as you pick out coordinating papers it can't fail to come out good and yet its always a surprise. Shakes things up a bit.

My recipe:
Colors: Prismacolors on Kraft
Papers: from stash, scraps
Tickets: Whimsy Stamps
Card Candy: from stash

I would like to play along with:

Make it Monday with Kraft Outlet -  - Anything Goes
Make it Monday - always Anything Goes
Pink Elephant - Stitching
Creative Inspirations Paint - Orange and Pink
Paper Sundaes -- Just Saying Hi
Crafty Emma - Mix and Match
Inspire Me Fridays - always anything goes

Thanks so much everyone for your encouraging comments. I know how busy we all are and its sometimes difficult to get around all the blogs we like to support, so I really appreciate the time it takes to stop and say hi. You guys are the best!
I'll see you around Blogland!

Ducky Update

Hi Guys!
Well a few of you keep asking about my ducks and wondering how they are. I figured the best way to tell you is to show you. My penned ducks are doing well but we are down to three free range ducks as one just got eaten two days ago by a fox or a raccoon. Not a turtle this time. I know because I found the feathers. :-( Turtles don't leave feathers.
Anyway, you'll notice in the video below the black duck to your right which I focus on and follow. That's Fibby, our crippled duck. You can see how he gets around quite well, albeit awkwardly .

These are our free range ducks below, looking into the pen where our penned ducks are.

(The photo below I am linking to Foto Friday.)

And Fiona the Crested Runner.

Gotta Love that Do!

And Kiki sees a bird or a plane or superduck below:

And here is our garden, in the midst of getting ripped apart and replanted for a second crop for Autumn/ Winter.

We would be totally lost if it weren't for our rainbarrels. Here are 5 of the 15. They used to be pickle barrels but my husband added spigots and made rainbarrels out of them, a fairly common thing here in the South.

So that's all I have to show today, I hope you all enjoy the weekend!

Below are the ingredients and in red are the ingredients I decided to use.
  • Colors – primary colors like red, yellow, blue (and green), and a little brown for dirt
  • Stamps and Stickers – anything that grows from a seed, gardening, back to school, worms!
  • Patterns – circles, checked/gingham, notebook paper
  • Color Mediums – stamping ink, markers (ProMarker, Copics)
  • Embellishments – buttons, ribbon, thread/twine
  • Tools – border punch, die cut shapes, embossing plates
  • Techniques – make a bookmark, mat your panels, tie ribbons through your buttons, machine sewing

Lyra Vs. Prismacolor

Pencil Talk

Lyra Rembrant Polycolors         vs./          Sanford Prismacolors

So side by side we have an example of a Mo Manning image colored in with both Lyra Rembrant Polycolor pencils and Sanford Prismacolors. (Just click on any of the pictures to get a real close, close up of the coloring) I have tried to stay true to the color families to make them as similar as possible for an accurate comparison.
At first glance you can see that the Lyras on the left are made up of more muted colors (noticable on kraft cardstock) wheras the Prismas are brighter.
Each one has its benefits and drawbacks.

Lyra Pros

* Lyras are oil based so they resist breakage as well as prevent "wax bloom"  (common among wax based pencils)

*The pencils leads are smooth and soft. They blend like butter but retain their point exceptionally well.

*Pigment application is "thin", transparent even, allowing you to layer multiple colors and achieve an even,  flawless, almost airbrushed look.

*Color names are based on traditional oil paint colors. No "cotton candy pink" here, you'll have ochres and red madder lake etc, very useful for someone familiar with oil painting and wanting to broaden their scope to include pencils
.
* 72 color range as well as 12 Skin Tones, 12 grays and some metallics sold separately (There are adequate skin tones included in the 72 but some find that the skin tone set is a very useful  addition for coloring hair and fur~ not just skin)

*Available in sets or individually

*Lightfast

   Lyra Cons

*limited range of colors in comparison with other brands.

*not as readily available in the USA in shops, but widely available through online sources like

Ebay
Amazon

    Prismacolor Pros

* A wide 132 color range

* Super soft leads make blending a dream

*Available in sets or individually

*pigment application is somewhat thick and opaque , allowing almost oil pastel effects

*Lightfast

 Prismacolor Cons

*Prismacolors break notoriously easily. Even when using a Prismacolor pencil sharpener and careful handling.

* Pigment goes down thick and soft which is both an advantage and a disadvantage. The disadvantage is that you need to keep a sharpener at hand at all times for frequent sharpenings.

*Prismacolors are wax based.

* For some reason Prismacolor doesn't put much energy into making storage tins that work well. From the first day I bought my set I have not been able to replace the lid without a large rubber band. (from what other artists tell me this is a common complaint.) If you have the money, invest in their super duper wooden set like the ones below: (beauties, aren't they?) A click on the picture will take you to Dick Blick Art Supplies where you can purchase them.
Deluxe Collection, Set of 120Wood Box, Set of 72

OK, so back to the picture comparison:
Lyra:

     Prismacolor:

If you notice, the Lyra pencils give a somewhat darker hue even though I used the same family of colors as  the  Prismacolors.
This is because the first layer of color I aply when doing skin  is CREAM, which, in Prismacolors is a much whiter, opaque cream  but Lyra's cream is slightly transparent with more yellow tones.
This can be remedied if you first put down a layer of WHITE when using Lyras and continue as normal. See below the result when you do this. It's much brighter.

It all depends on what look you're going for; skin tones come in all hues~ but it's nice to know that most likely you can achieve the look you want if you want to be bothered to work it out.

Bottom Line:
I am no expert but I would have to say that Lyras have the upper hand in both durability and performance. Sorry Prismacolor.
In saying that I will still be using my Prismas cos I do love them!  Neither set displaces the other. Each has its distinct advantages. However, you may be seeing me use more of the Lyras from now on and probably, more frequently, a blend of both.

I hope this was useful for anyone contemplating a pencil purchase!

Something To Celebrate

HI Again!
Well I've been in a coloring mood lately. There's tons of things that need to be done in the garden for a second crop planting etc but it's so stinkin hot I can't motivate myself to do much out there except tend to my ducks.
Soooooooooo..............
isn't this cute? I know that pink isn't technically a 'boy color' but oh well. It's called artistic licence. :-)

OK, so what is there to celebrate? Well, I'll tell you something!
Look what came in the mail today.
(It's one of the perks of babysitting for my sister. ;-)

Is this not BEAUTIFUL!!!!

And because I needed to make up a minimum purchase requirement for shipping, a few Carbothello Pastel Pencils.

Now, I know what you're all thinking.
What about my prismacolors? Aren't I being kind of disloyal??
Well, hey. It's like this.
Prismas are great. Love em to bits. But there's one thing I really hate about them and that's the ease with which they break. Now Sanford is an excellent company and if any prismas break you can send them back to the company for a a replacement and I've done this several times, fact is, I always have a pile of pencils "to go back" at any given time. It's just the "con" side of having a super soft pencil.
Anyway, Lyras are also fabulous pencils . They're soft and creamy as well. Research tells me that they don't break as readily as Prismas due to the fact that they're oil based rather than wax based.
(which means that they also wont leave a "wax bloom" on your artwork)

I had a few Lyras in my stash, some aquarelles and Lyra skin tones , so I'd been experimenting with them the last week or so, mixing them with my prismas to see how well they work. And the fact is they work beautifully.
So From now on you're going to see me using both Lyras and Prismas. Prismas have a wider color range but like I said, Lyras have the durability.

The Carbothello was just a fun experiment. I haven't tried pastel pencils before so I thought I'd give it a go.
That's it from me!

For You

Hi All!
Today's project for WhimsyAndStars  was a lot of fun to make. Linda, from Catered Crop sent me a little goody bag of bits and bobs and in it was some chipboard frames. This is actually the first time I worked with chipboard, can you believe it? I covered the frame with decorative paper to match my project and stuck it on at an "artsy angle". :-)Whatcha think? Spices things up a bit.

My Recipe:

Here For You ~ Toby Tumble

Hi All!
Just a quickie post today. This is a sympathy/thinking of you card I made some weeks ago .. I am using a Toby Tumble image from Cuddly Buddly. Just love him.
The layout is very "bare bones" but I needed something quickly and had spent  too much time already coloring the image. Know the feeling? LOL
And a close up. Sorry its a bit blurry.
I'm using Prismacolors on Kraft cardstock.

That's it!
Have a great day everyone!
